Example 1 – Rotary laser plastic welding
The newly developed rotation unit overcomes the limitations of other laser systemsCustomer problem and requirement
A manufacturer needs to welda plastic structure to an external transparent surface:
- The existing laser-plastic welding solution had to be replaced by an innovative rotary welding head
- Closed-loop temperature control is required to optimise the process
The Mergenthaler solution
- Standard 140W Mergenthaler diode laser LM140; standard laser head LH103; newly developed rotary unit
- The design, construction and manufacture of the innovative rotary welding head were completed within 10 weeks
- The laser beam is guided around the cylinder wall by a rotating arm, so that the workpiece does not need to be moved
- Control is provided by the LPC04 LASCON controller
- The rotational speed and the number of revolutions required are set by the control software
Current status
- The first units are currently being installed at the production site
- The system replaces an existing ultrasonic welding system
Example 2 – Laser plastic welding
The LASCON controller ensures optimum process speed and quality during laser plastic weldingCustomer problem and requirement
A Tier 1 automotive supplier requires plastic fusion splicers to fuse polymer optical fibre (POF) cables to plastic connectors. POFs are used in automotive applications for Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) networks.
- The manufacturer requires a compact system for integration into the assembly machine
- Full process control for the shortest possible cycle time and the best weld quality
The Mergenthaler solution
- We have supplied various laser components, including:
- compact laser processing heads
- complete laser systems
- LASCON controllers
Current situation
- Hundreds of millions of connectors have been welded using Mergenthaler equipment
- Installations in factories around the world. In operation at various customer sites for almost 20 years
